Abstract
As the world has begun to sharpen its efforts to reduce the impact of climate change, global industries must reckon with how to alter their technology to fit both consumer demands and new regulations. Among these industries is motorsports. Formula 1, NASCAR, and Formula E, three of the world’s largest motorsports organizations, have each developed initiatives to meet these changing standards. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of these initiatives at reducing environmental impacts, including examining the degree to which greenwashing tactics detract from these efforts. It finds that while NASCAR’s efforts lack behind new industry standards, Formula E and Formula 1’s initiatives are pushing the boundaries of sustainability within automotive technology. Though greenwashing does impact each series differently, overwhelmingly, the tangible impacts of these initiatives are clear. If motorsports organizations continue to invest in developing and prompting sustainable automotive technology, they could revolutionize the automotive industry as a whole.
