Abstract
James Roosevelt Bayley, an Episcopalian minister, converted to Catholicism in 1842. In 1853, Pope Pius IX called on him to head the newly formed See of Newark, New Jersey. Immediately prior to and during the Civil War, Bayley issued pastoral letters, one in January 1861, the other in April 1865. Although focusing on religion rather than specific events, both letters addressed the war and how it affected spiritually the Catholic population that he oversaw.
