Course Description

International Political Economy (IPE) is an interdisciplinary subject, which deals with the interaction between politics and economics on a global scale. This course is designed to provide students with the conventional and critical approaches to the study of global political economy. It will focus on issues of international trade, the international monetary system, and foreign investment and the relationship of each to both international and domestic politics. Among the specific topics to be discussed are: trade and protectionism, the role and performance of global institutions such as the IMF, World Bank, and WTO, the significance of multinational corporations, the impact of regional economic communities, and the relationship of the world economy to the economic development of poor countries. The complexities and contradictions of globalization serve as the overarching backdrop for this course.
