Course Description
This class will develop an answer to the following question: Where does order come from in International Relations? In the first part of the course, we will lay the groundwork to answer this question. First, we will explore the conditions that make cooperation more or less likely. Second, we will discuss actors in international relations: states, international governmental organizations (IGOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private sector actors like multinational corporations (MNCs). Third, we will talk about how these actors interact with one another to solve pressing global problems.
The second part of this course is topic specific. In exploring current global problems that include security, economic development, human rights, and the environment, we will understand why it is that global policymaking is a demanding endeavor. This will allow us to better appreciate the barriers that exist to international cooperation, and understand the conditions under which those barriers can be resolved.
